Important update: As of 30 August 2026, applications for the main 2026/27 UCL Global Scholarships are closed. UCL has not yet published the final 2027/28 deadlines for those schemes. Applicants preparing for 2027/28 should use previous deadlines only for planning and verify the new deadline before applying.

Does UCL Offer Scholarships for International Students?

Yes. University College London offers scholarships and other funding opportunities to international students at undergraduate, postgraduate taught, and postgraduate research levels.

However, there is no single scholarship called simply the “UCL international student scholarship.”

International applicants should identify funding according to their study level:

Undergraduate students: Start with the UCL Global Undergraduate Scholarship.
Master’s students: Start with the UCL Global Master’s Scholarship and International Masters Awards.
PhD and research students: Start with UCL Research Excellence Scholarship and departmental studentships.

UCL Global Undergraduate Scholarship

The UCL Global Undergraduate Scholarship is the main UCL funding route for international undergraduate students from lower-income backgrounds.

23 scholarships covering full tuition fees.

The scholarship is open to eligible international applicants from any country. Selection is primarily based on financial need, not simply grades or extracurricular achievements.

Who Is Eligible for the UCL Global Undergraduate Scholarship?

An applicant must generally:

qualify for overseas tuition-fee status;
come from a low-income background;
submit an application for a full-time UCL undergraduate degree;

UCL’s scholarship-specific page states that an annual household income equivalent to approximately USD 58,027 or below is generally used as guidance for this award.

That figure is not an automatic eligibility guarantee or rejection threshold. UCL can consider additional financial circumstances.

Do You Need a UCL Offer Before Applying?

No.

For the Global Undergraduate Scholarship, an applicant must have submitted an undergraduate admission application, but the final admission offer does not necessarily need to have arrived before the scholarship application is submitted.

UCL must, however, confirm the applicant’s overseas fee status before the applicant can access the relevant funding process.

How Much Does the UCL Global Undergraduate Scholarship Cover?

There are two materially different types of award.

UCL Global Undergraduate Scholarship Deadline

The verified deadline for 2026/27 was:

5:00 PM BST on 27 April 2026.

Successful candidates were due to be notified by 3 June 2026. UCL states that late or incomplete applications are not considered.

The 2027/28 deadline has not yet been confirmed.

Students targeting 2027 entry should therefore prepare admission and financial documents early but wait for UCL to publish the new deadline before treating any date as official.

UCL Global Master’s Scholarship

The UCL Global Master’s Scholarship supports international students from lower-income backgrounds who want to undertake full-time taught master’s study at UCL.

For 2026/27, UCL offered up to 85 scholarships.

The published award converts to approximately USD 20,301 for one year. Five awards were ring-fenced for students from India, while another formed part of the Japan-focused Musubi scholarship.

Who Can Apply for the UCL Global Master’s Scholarship?

Applicants must generally:

qualify for overseas fee status;
come from a lower-income background;

apply for a full-time taught master’s programme;
attend UCL physically in the UK.

Distance-learning programmes are not eligible for the Global Master’s Scholarship.

No.

UCL first applies the scholarship toward tuition fees. If any award money remains after tuition is covered, that remainder can be paid to the student in instalments for maintenance.

Consider an illustrative example.

If an international student faces tuition equivalent to USD 45,000 and receives approximately USD 20,301 from the Global Master’s Scholarship, the scholarship does not eliminate the full tuition bill.

The student would still need to finance the remaining tuition plus accommodation and living expenses.

Can the Global Master’s Scholarship Be Combined With Other Funding?

Potentially, yes.

UCL states that the Global Master’s Scholarship may be held alongside other scholarships, studentships, bursaries, or awards depending on the total funding received.

Recipients must tell the UCL Student Funding Office about other funding awarded toward their degree.

This makes external scholarship research particularly important for applicants whose master’s tuition exceeds the Global Master’s award.

What Happens for a Two-Year Master’s Programme?

The scholarship is normally a one-year award.
